"Pootgoed uit de bovenmaat halen, is financieel interessant en verbetert de bewaring", deelt Jaap de Zeeuw, al 45 jaar pootgoedteler in Emmeloord. Dit seizoen draaide landbouwbedrijf Gebroeders De Zeeuw als een van de eerste met de nieuwe Digitale Maatsorteerder van RMA-Techniek. Daarmee kunnen ze op een halve millimeter nauwkeurig instellen welke knollen opnieuw als pootgoed in de kist terechtkomen.

Samen met aanvrager RMA-Techniek ontvangen Meijer Potato en Avans Hogeschool een subsidiebedrag van €173.920. De samenwerkende partners willen een machine met bijbehorende software ontwikkelen die door middel van hyperspectrale meting (een technologie waarbij de aardappel niet wordt aangetast) de kwaliteit van aardappelen kan bepalen. De focus ligt daarbij op vaste stof metingen en een meting van de chemische samenstelling (eiwit en suiker). Deze doelstelling is nauw verbonden met de maatschappelijke transitie van digitalisering, waarbij geavanceerde technologieën worden ingezet om de landbouwsector te moderniseren en duurzamer te maken.

"Waar aardappelen nu veilig boven de overeengekomen grens worden gesorteerd, kun je met deze machine veel nauwkeuriger de grens opzoeken," legt oprichter en directeur Michel Remijn van RMA-Techniek het grote verschil tussen het gebruik van twee- en driedimensionale (2- en 3D) camera sorteertechniek uit. "De nu gangbare 2D-beelden meten de gemiddelde omtrek en lengte van een aardappel. Wij maken van iedere aardappel een 3D-model en dat maakt de machine heel geschikt om specifieke maten te sorteren."

The level of tare percentage or degree of defects quite often causes contentious discussions between grower and buyer. More uniform protocols and more accurate quality assessments through automation can prevent such discussions. How this can be done, manufacturer RMA would like to demonstrate at the upcoming Potato Demo Day in Westmaas and at Interpom in Kortrijk in the fall.

Schellach Cheese Farm in Middelburg has 85 dairy cows and processes 100 percent of the milk itself, says Robbie Mesu, one of the owners. “We have been making farmhouse cheese and buttermilk for almost forty years now. And recently also yogurt, custard and chocolate milk. Because the dairy farm we bought that from stopped producing. We started experimenting with our own pasteurizer. With custard and yoghurt. That yielded some great products. Then we also started doing the dairy ourselves. We put up a completely new building, for the farm store as well as the cheese storage with robotic arm.”
